The Department of Civil Defence in Nagaland was established in 1982 but was later converted as Home Guards on 1/03/1988 by the Nagaland Home Guards’ Ordinance of 1987. The Nagaland Home Guards’ Acts of 1988 was passed by the State Legislative Assembly on 12^th May, 1988. However, as both the Home Guards’ and Civil Defence complement each other, the Department was re-designated as the Department of Home Guards’ & Civil Defence vide Govt. Notification NO.POL-23/CD/40/82 dated Kohima the 6^th June, 1998. The mandate of the Home Guards wing is to augment and assist the civil police in the maintenance of law and order and for regulation of traffics.
